1. I grew up on a farm where i was comfortable with the culture of killing animals for food and shooting animals for sport. Now i think i would cry if i had to shoot a deer. NOW, if the deer was attacking me that would probably be no problem. Having said this, I still enjoy hamburgers and porkchops but I think the corporate feedlot led to the demise of honest ethical agricutlure. I am conflicted about all of this...

2. I want to adopt a pot bellied pig when i have a few acres for it to sloth around on.

3. The idea of childbirth really grosses me out and if you talk to me about your own birthing experiences it will make me want to vomit. I cannot explain why and I wish I could change this. Also, i think it is wierd to post ultrasound pics on FB and myspace. I mean I am not trying to offend anyone here, however, that is the inside of you - and that to me is personal...

4. I have a yellow bellied slider turtle named Monk. He might be a girl.

5. I own over 40 handbags.

6. I have a nice Wizard of Oz Collection, most of it still resides at my parents house.

7. I sew, design handbags from recycled menswear, can tomatoes, and bake my own bread. I think Martha Stewart is the cat's pajamas. I like it that she has served time in prison. I also like it that she is really bitchy. A few people in my life have told me "you have too much time on your hands, have a kid already" and i did not talk to them for a long time afterwards

8. I LOVE teaching people.

9. I want to travel to India Dec 2009.

10. I love my dogs like they are my children. They are shelter dogs. I think shelter / rescue dogs are the best and I will never compromise on this. YAY for hybrid vigor.

11. One of my favorite childhood memories was playing basketball with Jeremy and then realizing it was 8:00 and racing into the house to catch the latest Cosby show episode.

12. When i was in the 6th grade I played center for our elementary school basketball team in two games. I usually started forward.

13. I will NEVER miss an episode of Project Runway and I think Heidi Klum hung the moon.

14. When I was a sixth grader I placed third in the Kentucky State Junior 4-H Swine Judging Contest.

15. I took a quiz on belief.net about what religious group I should join and it said that I was 80% Quaker.

16. My favorite part of back to school shopping as a kid was definitely the school supplies - specifically the trapper keeper.

17. I am very particular about what kinds of paper and pen that I use.

18. I am 29 and I have a ton of gray hair. I mean way more then the average 29 year old.

19. Another great childhood memory I have is having my best friend Natalie over on Sundays. I remember sitting on the front porch swing and being SOOO excited when her mom's station wagon would pop over the hill. We had lots of good fun.

20. I cannot sleep well unless my sheets, blankets, and comforter are perfectly placed.

21. I think kentucky is God's country.

Heaven is blue, Kentucky has bluegrass... it all makes sense to me.

22. I have a really bad temper and unfortunately hold grudges. I know this and I have been working on it for the past couple of years.

23. I used to sling vegetables for a living. I was laid off and this changed my life. That is why I love working in career development.

24. I feed off of making people laugh. I am wise enough to know that I started doing this because i am the baby of five and like to get attention.

25. I worked in retail for all four years of college and a couple summers in high school. Because of this, I will NEVER shop on the day after Thanksgiving because I know it is the crappiest day of the year to work and people are really really mean when it comes to buying cheap christmas gifts.

Nature Table Part 1

Tonight we started on the Nature Table project. It was interesting....

I took Tajaroo on a little expedition in the flower bed to "explore". He was interested in the flowers and I assisted him in picking a two zinnias from my bed. He watched as a I pulled weeds and he attempted to imitate by pulling up grass. The big problem is..... he will not move in the grass. It is as if he has stepped into concrete. He just won't do it. I have to practically force him to even enter the lawn. He has no issues coasting on sidewalks, tromping around in the dirt, and hitting a fevered pace in the driveway but my boy is no fan of grass .. for now. We noticed an abandoned bird's nest which my husband made me promise not to touch... ITS DIRTY - he screamed from the lawnmower. So for now - our nature table consists of :

1. A small birdhouse (a potential hiding place for the gnomes).
2. Two cut zinnias.
3. My Aunt Juanita's box - adorn with a beautiful rose on top. - it keeps things safe.
4. A bird / gnome gazebo.
5. Two tiny chalkboards - adorn with flora and the sun.
6. A scrap of cotton fabric with lots of posies.
7. Two peg people -soon to be gnomes.

The past 17 months of my life have been overwhelming. Filled with joy and tears the same. Everyday that I take my 8 minute commute to my office, I think about what my child is doing at daycare and who is taking in all of his cries and his wonderful laughs. I wonder who is getting the best of him and the worst of him. I love my daycare but everyday the guilt associated with leaving my little guy with someone else gets bigger and bigger.

Recently, I have the opportunity to learn more about Waldorf education. I can only say that it seems like such a wondrous way to raise a child. I have been doing a good bit of research and while I can't exactly walk out on my financial responsibilities by quitting my job, I am hopeful that I can incorporate some of these themes and traditions into my household.

This week, Taj and I will begin to build our nature table. An old coffee table (just his size) will start us off and I plan on using the rest of the summer to fill our table with fun elements from the world around us. Here are some great examples of nature tables I am using for inspiration.

You may recall that I started blogging long ago about stuff.
Today, I return to the orginal mission and will talk about stuff.
Today I write mostly about baby stuff since that is what I obsess about..

Here are some items I am currently loving....

1. Aden & Anais Swaddle Blankets. Amanda and Taj approved.
He won't part with his blankie for naps or night night.
I prefer the ones straight from Aden and Anais instead of the Target or Diapers.com versions.

2.  Cabbage Patch Cutie
A tiny, fun version of a doll I loved as a child. This was a gift from his Papa.

3. Plan Toys Tea Set
Every boy needs a tea set. Atleast that's what I think. We have removed the smallets parts and saved   them for when Taj is a little bigger - but we have lots of fun with this.

4. Chocolate Chip Cookies
These cookies are lots of fun. They are safe for the slobbery, teething kid who wants some relief on those gums. They also make good things to clack together.... He loves them:)

5. The Kindle
I love it. So convenient and reads just like a New York Times bestseller. I still hit up the library and bookstore but this makes reading so easy and fun! I love scouring the internet for great FREE ebooks.

and forgotten how to blog.

So here it is, a long overdue update. Life has been chaotic. Happy. Sad. Heavy. Lite.

Over the past few weeks, it seems that we have be flying around like two sparrows in a hurricane. Taj Kumar has morphed into a little boy and this weekend I spent a short time grieving the loss of my "baby". On May 12, he turned 15 mos and after months of hesitation we decided to finally wean the kid from his bottle. I was prepared for the worst. Apparently, I don't know my child very well. After a brief tantrum and puzzled look, he proceded with life as usual sans bottle.

Winter has been hard on the wee one. On average, Taj was sick every 4 weeks through the cold and flu season. We are ready for spring dammit! And she was supposed to be here a while ago. You wouldn't know it today in southwest Indiana. It is chilly again and I am wearing a fleece pull over today at work. I have some big plans for us. I have sunflower seeds to plant and plans for more vegetables. An amazingly aggressive crop of weeds in my flower bed as well. I guess we will get to those eventually.

Taj has decided to approach his next physical milestone with the same form as all of the earlier milestones. Much like his Momma, he has a "wait to the last minute" mantra. This weekend he took his first solo steps but seems hell bent on training to break some world record for speed crawling. He has also taken to the art of throwing his head up and down like a raging bull while crawling... its entertaining to say the least. I anticipate he will walk like a champ in the next four weeks, but I am not rushing him... Life is one overcrowded 5k and I have never been a runner.

This week I got some sad news about a very dear family member who has been diagnosed with cancer in several areas of his body. Certainly I am sad for him. God's great puzzle seems even more complex when I hear news such as this. Since I got the news, I have a new anxiety to obsess about... praying. There is a litany of research and literature that supports the theory of the power of prayer. However, I feel like I have forgotten how to do it. I close my eyes usually before bed and begin some sort of dialogue that starts with "I know you haven't heard from me in a while but...." I am pretty sure its not supposed to start out that way. Soon enough, my mind becomes too crowded and distracted and I lose my focus. Will someone please remind me how to pray!!!! I need some suggestions. There has got to be some treatment for the prayer ADD that I am currently experiencing...

Also, can someone please remind how to forgive? Thats' not working out for me too well either.

Its finally Friday, Im free again, got my motor runnin for a WILD weekend.....

I love that song. There are a collection of good old school country songs that I revel in from childhood - that is one of them. I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

Professionally, this week is a blur. I feel like every single minute was planned and I spent the majority running, typing, talking, grading and yada yada.

Personally, I attempted to wean Taj from the bottle ..... It took me about two minutes to figure out that life is too damn short. I choose not to rush this kid into childhood. Everyone needs a cocktail around the 5:00 hour so he will have his and I will have mine, maybe after he goes to bed :)

How did that little guy grow so quickly. Celebrating my son's birthday this past weekend was bittersweet. As much as I love to see Taj grow into a booming being of curiosity, I am deeply saddened that his infancy is over. I look at him today with tear filled eyes knowing that soon enough I will be asking- where did those five years go? I don't intend to make this post purely about my son, even though it is so easy to do, but looking at my one year old - I am reminded of what I need for my life before five years escapes me.

I had the opportunity to talk with a handful of students today about reducing stress. Awww. a novel idea - reducing stress. We started the hour with a life wheel exercise which helps one become aware of the areas in life that need more attention. For me, my wheel was unbalanced. Where was I lacking? Fun and Spirituality. This year, I will restore fun. I will find a way to communicate with the God I talked to all the time as a child....
Saying so and doing so are much different, here's hoping the doing is easy.

Dear Year of Two Thousand and Eleven.

This letter has taken me one full year to prepare for. Throughout the year of Two Thousand and Ten I thought almost every day of what I wanted from Two Thousand and Eleven. I want you to be different. I want this to be a big and wonderful year. While there is no way you can compete with the fact that Two Thousand and Ten gave me my first born child, I do expect that you do your part in making this year a year filled with more and more happiness and less tears.

In February of your predecessor, I was blessed with the most precious gift of all. I did not realize before that gift arrived that it would bring with all this other stuff that I did not exactly ask for. For the record, there should be a return policy on post partum depression and six months of sleepless nights... Okay, I will accept the sleepless nights but the 6 months of weepiness and guilt - well I definitely want my money back on that stuff.....

Also Two Thousand and Eleven, I expect that there will be no hospital stays for me or my child. I request no more pneumonia or breathing treatments. I can handle the occasional ear infection or bronchitis but I am not putting my kid into a torture device for a chest xray again so I am just putting that out there. Make this happen. I will do my part, you do yours gosh dammit.

Since you are going to provide me with more sleep, I am hoping for more and more quality time for my husband and I. More movie going and less "Rob and Big" watching. Also, without a doubt, you need to build in some time for my honeymoon. Make sure that happens in September please.

I realize that I cannot hold you, Two Thousand and Eleven, accountable for such things as weight gain and weight loss. However, if you could just remind me to try and be healthier everyday that would be helpful. Also, if you could make sure that I can find the time to take that Yoga class on Thursday nights with my buddy, I will be muchos grateful.

I am looking for to working with you Two Thousand and Eleven.

Sacrifices

You read all about the sacrifices that one must make as they enter into motherhood. For what I have gotten in return, I don't feel like I have had to sacrifice anything that was too hard to give up. Of course, this is easy to say now that I am past the intitial four months of no sleep. Now that Taj is talking, giggling, playing, and turning I feel like I can finally exhale! The HUGE amount of anxiety that has plaqued me everyday since I gave birth is finally fleeting. I feel a bit of freedom knocking at my door - So what now?

Yes, there are certain things I cannot do any longer but I am done morning the loss of my independence. I have learned to look at life with a new approach. I am starting to really focus on tradeoffs. For the past month, I have been dying to bake again and get my hands dirty in the kitchen. While I am no fan of coming home and preparing dinner every night, I do LOVE to bake. I love baking breads, muffins, cakes etc. With this little one, it has been difficult to stop and enjoy those things I once loved with so many other things I could be doing. Things like dusting, vacuuming, organizing, mopping etc etc. Yesterday I finally decided that for the sake of mental health, I was going to have to bake in the middle of disarray. I prepared some delicious baby veggie soup for Taj and then I dusted off my kitchenaid mixer. I baked the tastiest little doughnut muffins and all the while, my carpet was covered with a thin layer of dog hair and there were piles of laundry in the dining room.

It is hard getting used to the idea that I might never be the housekeeper that my mother was. That more often than not, if you stop by my house, there will probably be a few tumbleweeds of dog hair rolling around and some dishes in the sink. I have finally let go of this notion that every Saturday morning should be spent cleaning. Now, I certainly don't intend for my house to be filthy all of the time, but it feels great to entertain the idea that on some days, among the chaos, we can still laugh, love, and BAKE!

The Beaba Babycook

This weekend I had the opportunity to experiment with my Beaba Babycook. Saturday started with a trip to the Vincennes Farmer's Market. I purchased two butternut squash, tomatoes, and a jar of Papa Ed's Pepper Butter.

During Taj's first morning nap, I cut up the squash into tiny cubes and commenced to steaming and then pureeing in the Babycook. In retrospect, I wish I had just cooked the squash by roasting it in the oven as cleaning and cubing the butternut squash took a good 15-20 minutes and these days, i don't have that much time to spare. In any case, the steaming process took about 15 minutes. I then pureed by adding back my cooking water and pulsing for quite a while. The squash babyfood is good, although it is pretty thick and starchy. It seems best served with some extra water before warming and a nice thin fruit.

Two batches of squash later, I opened my "Cooking for Baby" cookbook. I then, set out to make Taj a fan of zucchini.

While I am still a bit skeptical about the zucchini, the cookbook states that zucchini is a perfect "first food" because of its mild and tender flesh. It also added that the skin would provide great nutrional value. I cleaned (throughly) two zucchini and then cubed them and let my Babycook do its work. The result was a beautiful rich, green puree. I tasted it and frankly, the flavor was very strong but tasty - especially when paired with my third and final babyfood project of the day....

A couple of friends have asked me if my blog, formerly all about crafting, sewing, handbags, and other random "stuff" is going to turn into a blog about baby "stuff". The answer to that question is yes and no. Now that I have a baby in my life it is hard not to write about the good and bad "stuff" you find when catering to the needs of a growing child. With that said, I don't intend to leave out the good and bad stuff that apply to big girls and boys either. So don't turn me off just yet.

Ella's Organic Baby Food

Just recieved by first order from diapers.com of Ella's Organic Baby Foods.

Why did this conventional farm girl go for this expensive ORGANIC baby food?

Here is my justification.

1. I had a coupon and free shipping.

2. I was bored with the standard Gerber and Beech Nut varieties.

3. The packaging is brilliant.

4. I have not had the time yet to break out my super dee duper Beaba Baby Food Maker and after reading the reviews of this baby food, I figured it was the closest thing to fresh, homemade baby food I could find.

After using the baby food, here is my review.

Positive

1. The baby food tastes very, very fresh - you can tell there are absolutely no additives (water, sugar, etc).

2. The packaging is pretty awesome, no baby food on my fingers etc. Reminds me of my capri-sun days.

3. The flavors I have tried so far taste yummy and I have not been able to find baby food in stage one that include fruits and veggies like blueberries, pumpkin, and parsnips in many other brands.

Negative

1. When I buy a food called Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Pumpkin, and Blueberries - I expect that the first ingredient with the largest percentage would be sweet potatoes - NOT SO MUCH - it is apples. In fact, over half of the make up is apples, with sweet potatoes only being 23%.You will find that with several of their varieties, a fruit is the first ingredient. I think that is a bit misleading.

NO WONDER THEY TASTE SO GOOD!

Almost 5 months ago, I gave birth to a booming bundle of joy named Taj Kumar aka- tajaroo, tajmia, tajers, tajimoto, pea pie. 5 months ago I began to sacrifice the comfort and joy that comes with a full night sleep. With all my family and friends rallying behind me, they all assured me that eventually little tajer dodger would eventually sleep through the night. They said this at 5 weeks, at 8 weeks, at 12 weeks and now - everyone just says - I'm sorry.

And now... every night from 2-4 am little Taj and I do this dance.
He wimpers, I lay awake and think, maybe he will just go back to sleep.
About 5 minutes later, the wimper becomes more frantic, like "HEY YOU - WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO ME? GET IN HERE ALREADY!
2-3 Minutes later and I have a mad little monkey demanding some attention.
About 5 minutes later, he is gulping down his 4 oz and all is right again in his world.
I lay him down after he is done and listen to him talk and gurgle himself back to sleep.
Now, it is 25 minutes later and I lay awake listening to the sweet conversations a 5 mos old has with himself as my husband is sleeping soundly.

So what to do? The doctor tells me it is about time to let the little guy cry out that mid night feeding. At 15+ lbs, he doesn't physically need it and is probably waking more out of habit than hunger. Also, the sooner I practice this new dance, the sooner Taj will get it. But what's a worried new mom like me to do?

To let cry or not let cry, I guess I am probably not the first new mom to ask this question.

There is a peace and placidity in college towns you will not find anywhere else from may to august. In gainesville, florida, watching swarms of students head toward the interstate sometimes saddens me, as i know that some i will never see again. but with the mass exodus a sense of calm overwhelms me.

Here is a fond farewell to some of the students i started with back in fall of 2006. the past two years have been wonderful, i am glad i could help.

One of my most favorite childhood memories was going to the library with my mom and brother. I would check out as many books as the law of the library allowed. With not much to do in Brandenburg Kentucky, the library was quite a field trip and treat for a bored child on a hot summer day.

This summer, i am going to slowly chip away at a new summer reading list. A reading list that allows for a few new easy fictions, but honors the classics as well. Here is my summer reading list. Some i read as an adolescent and i am excited to read them again as an almost responsible adult.

Products that DON'T Work.

I seldom take to the task of writing about products I don't like, i typically just discontine use. However, on this, i have to tell the world - DON'T BUY THE CLINIQUE ACNE SOLUTIONS LINE.

I am plagued with red marks and breakouts along the jawline and mouth. I have tried lots of things and nothing ever worked but seeing a dermatologist. I ran out of my prescriptions and thought i might try the new Clinique line to avoid another costly visit to a doctor and costly washes and creams.

4 months later, my skin was worse then ever. not only did it look bad- it was painful as well.

I am back to a 10% benzoyl peroxide wash and very light moisturizer, using sunscreen when i am in full sun. I can already that my skin is slowly healing and back to some sort of normal.

Reasons I think it stinks:

Salicylic Acid washes don't work for severe acne. The wash didn't clear up any of my blemishes or pores.
The toner burns if you have blemishes and irritates them even more.
The moisturizer didn't moisturize much and just left a wierd flaky film on my skin. I could not wear it during the day with make up. This product was the only one with benzoyl peroxide in it, but i couldn't tell that it helped to repair my broken out skin.
If you purchase all the full size products- its pretty darn expensive.

A dreadful thought...

This morning was a busy one.

After sleeping too late, i rallied up the troops (Lucky and Sampson) for a quick walk around the block. After suddenly realizing that i had forgotten to pick up the standard dog meds yesterday, i rushed them back in the door and headed to the vet clinic. When i arrived there were dozens of kittens up for adoption in the reception area so i poked around and played while I waited my turn in line. There was an older dog there that looked very ill accompanying a heartbroken owner. I tried my best not to think too much about the day when i might lose my Lucky.

Lucky's birthday is July 4th (we sorta made that up). She joined us in November of 2005 and she is our version of a first child. She is my first real pet as an adult (with the exception of numerous cows, pigs, horses, cats, and stray dogs from my youth). I love her so much the thought of losing her made me cry as i left the vet and all the way home. Since we got Sampson back in January, Lucky has changed so much. She seems so much older then she did almost two years ago. She still has the softest puppy fur imaginable but she is definately getting older - now a estimated 5 years old. Sometimes i wonder if she loves us as much as we love her. Sometimes i wonder if we make her happy or if she thinks to herself "what the hell is wrong with these people?" Am I crazy?

My husband and I have delayed having children for all the right reasons. We are both still students, so far away from family, and just plain not ready to give up life as we know it now for a little squalling ball of life. Dogs will suffice for now, but I sometimes wonder, if i am such a worrier dog owner- can you imagine what kind of worrier parent I will be? Its scary to think about.

On another note, i had to go to the mall to look for some make up and strolled through the handbag section of Dillards. Got a sweet deal on a beautiful leather bag from SAK. Originally priced at $149 I nabbed it for $25. I know I know, give it up on the purses already... I couldn't pass it up and because i am trying to follow the rule of "when something comes in something must go out" i went through my entire bag collection and put 15 bags in the give away pile. You might see a few on Ebay.

When work gets you down...

For me there is a very systematic approach to coping when work just sucks. This week I was fortunate enough to be put in some akward situations and be yelled at by a really sucky industry type. After a blow up phone call and receipt of a seven paragraph, un needed, completely verbose email from the jerk off who ripped me a new one on the phone ... I went completely mad. I was so angry I could hardly sleep.

So far my coping mechanism as involved lots of avoidance of the issue. I have moped and watched lots of television, tried to focus my energy on more progressive projects (school), prayed, read funny magazines, and played with my dogs alot. Still when i get home from work, i am still mad and find it difficult to really turn off the pissy work attitude. The akward project that is challenging my sanity will last 8 more weeks.

So what's a girl to do? As i have grown older, i have found my anger and self torment harder and harder to control. Any suggestions? Good books? A therapist?

Sorry for being so out of my blogging loop. This summer has been jam packed with work and school. Hopefully, if all goes well, the school part will end in August.... Yahoo!

I am on the hunt for a new work wardrobe. Following the philosophy of "dressing for the job you want instead of the job you have" I am trying to bring my dresscode up a couple of notches. At the end of summer I will be doing an academic presentation as well as a few fundraising visits. Anyone got any suggestions for where a girl can find a trendy "summer weight" suit for a size 14+? Don't say Lane Bryant please......

This weekend Raven and I embarked on a mini vacation to Clearwater Florida.

When we arrived what we found was an empty, windy, cold beach but an absolutely fabulous alternative spring break.

Instead of sunbathing we opted for:

Consuming appetizers, dessert, and loads of gin and tonic at the Cabana Beach Bar and Grill.

Chilling out in the hotel hot tub and heated pool.

Veggin on fresh fruit, boursin cheese, crackers and whatnots from our surprise gift basket.

Recovering from a toxic hang over by hitting up a greasy spoon on the beach.

Shopping in tacky surf style shops.

Getting our fill of fresh seafood at Crabby Bills.

Investigating paranormal activity on a ghost tour in our Haunted Hotel, The Belleview Biltmore Resort and Spa.

Closing down the hotel bar with hottie bartender Mike, Philly vacationers, and the ghost hunters; beer and cheetos provided by us.

This bag is contstructed of dark wash denim, felt interfacing, yellow polyester lining, a vintage necktie, wooden button, and suede cord. It is a bit more casual then i like and the shoulder strap is a bit long for my taste, but my next one will be better, more pics to come.

My stitches are a little skewed in certain spots but after finishing my first project I think i have my new machine all figured out. After three different seamripping episodes, I finally found the tension sweet spot.

Janet would be so proud of me.

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. 1) My cats are ying and yang: Soybean is a fastidiously clean, shrimp-loving, dignified, curious, one-woman-cat. Bella is so smelly that I bathe her every 2 weeks, she eats granola bars and rice krispy treats, and is an absolute slutty-kitty--she has no standards as long as you are offerring a belly rub.

2) Bella, The Neurotic, will go postal over a laser pointer.....this can sometimes lead to HOURS of entertainment in the oh-so-exciting-city of Wichita....

3) Soybean supervises my makeup application every morning.

4) Soybean is such a neat freak that, when the lid is left up, he will wash his paws in the toilet after using the litter box. (I have been trying to get this on film, but he gets stage-fright)

5) Bella submits to Soft Paw application like a little pro!

6) There is nothing like walking in the door and having 2 kitties scream at you because you were missed!

7) When they watch birdies out the window they make a little Ricky-Ticky-Tavi sound--such predators!!

8) Bella likes to play with wee house guests. (Soybean disappears)

A formal welcome to Samson. Samson is a Cairn terrier mix. He is 35 lbs of pure, uncompromising, love and affection. He was found as a stray with a severely broken elbow. His elbow was repaired by the University of Florida Vet School and he was then placed in a rescue shelter. We are so happy to have found him, my pictures cannot do him justice. He has made my husband and I very happy. Lucky is still considering giving him back. By the way, he HATES getting his pic taken. The look above says it all. When there is no flash around, he is all smiles

In the month of December over 200 dogs were picked up by Alachua County Animal Services. Many of these dogs are still at the pound waiting for families or possible euthanization. Many dogs have been farmed out to local rescue organizations like Helping Hands of Newberry, FL, where we found Samson and Haile's Angels, where we found Lucky over one year ago.

You can't laugh at the title, unless you watch Chappelle's Show.

In my former life, I was a cold weather chic. I loved winter (still do), in part because snow is fun and lots of pranks can be played in the snow. Mostly my fascination with winter began because of the clothing. Freezing temperatures allow for layering up.

Maybe it is because at this stage of my life, the thought of shedding layers is harrowing in itself. When you are at a size where showing sking is not an option and the hot summer weather is particularly dreadful, the concept of layering with blazers, scarves, cute jackets, and vests is somehow comforting in the cold winter months. Like a hot bowl of chili, or a steaming cup of joe, cold weather fashion has its perks.

With all of that said, it is a cool 56 degrees today in Gainesville, Fl. Now I know most of you out there are thinking, 56 degrees - that is practically planting weather! Yes, it practically is, but when the slightest breeze comes through Florida, young women everywhere break out their seasonal accessories.

This morning I saw leather jackets, cashmere scarves, Ugg boots, wool jackets, gloves, and hats. All of it was quite laughable, but at the same time inspiring.

6. Volunteer monthly.

9. Design and maintain a beautiful courtyard garden.
10. Go on more dates with my husband.

If you have been keeping up with Lucky Girl Seeks Lovely Stuff then you have a basic familiarity with my roots. One part city girl with three parts country girl. While I have never lived in the big city, most of you have probably recognized that I have an acute obsession with the idea of living in a real city and throwing myself into a mass cosm of retail. I have dreams of wearing black sunglasses and scarves and galavanting in the streets, drinking coffee, shopping for couture, and carrying a big, beautiful, very expensive handbag. This is the small city girl part of me. It is what it is, a dream. My pocketbook hardly allows for couture or a big expensive handbag, and only skinny people look good galavanting on the streets of NYC with coffee and big sunglasses.

The largest part of me, finds solice in the lifestyle in which I was raised. I hail from the great state of Kentucky, the bluegrass state, horse capital of the world, the home of ale -8, slawburgers, and bottles of ski. I always imagined that once I left, I would not return. There had to be a much better life waiting for me far away from Kentucky. However, it wasn't until I left (we left) that I realized how much Kentucky was a part of me.

I have tried to explain to many. It wasn't until this weekend, that I found a Kentucky author who took the thoughts right from head and put them on paper. If you know Kentucky, you probably also know Wendell Berry.

"On the other hand, I knew I had not escaped Kentucky, and had never really wanted to. I was still writing about it, and had recognized that I would need to write about it for the rest of my life. Kentucky was my fate- not an altogether pleasant fate, though it had much that was pleasing in it, but one that I could not leave behind simply by going to another place, and that I therefore felt more and more obligated to meet directly and to understand. Perhaps even more imporant, I still had a deep love for the place I had been born in, and liked the idea of going back to be part of it again. And that, too, I felt obligated to try to understand . Why should I love one place so much more than any other? What could be the meaning or use of such love?"

Father forgive me, it has been weeks since my last blog.

After hearing from many readers and fans of the blog, it has occurred to me that most people enjoy my writing more then my "lists" and displays of "stuff". I will remain loyal to the original intent of the blog (showcasing lovely stuff) but will also try to spend more time in writing and thought.

So for the new year, I resolve to write more then ever. In doing this, I hope that my readers will be satisfied and find it refreshing. As always, your comments and feedback are encouraged.

Are There Really any "Rules for the Road"??---Guest Blog

As my Sunday evening is drawing to a close, I am packing my bags for a 3-day whirlwind trip which will take me to 3 different time zones. I travel quite a bit with my job, averaging about 40 flights per year, so I guess that some could say that I am a "seasoned" traveller.

So I began thinking, as the holidays approach, many rookies will hit the air, so what wisdom can I share with my fellow travellers?? Here is a sampling of what have I learned over the last 5 years as a Road Warrior--

1) When going through security, try to get in a line behind the people in suits with laptop bags--follow the Road Warriors---they know the ropes and don't dawdle. Stay away from the lines with the Grandmas, children, and the college chics with so many piercings that you know the TSA is going to have to wand them. Also stay away from the middle-aged women with pageant queen hair, coral nail polish, and Vera Bradley purses--they are ALWAYS the ones that that pitch a fit when they have to take off their shoes.

2) A note about carryons--keep it light. You are going to have to lift this bag over your head. It is not a good idea to attempt to transport a case of Ale-8's in glass bottles in your carryon bag--especially on the puddle jumper from Lexington to Minneapolis. Trust me....been there.

3) NEVER put any part of your body in someone else's seat space. Like the long-legged man who thought that he could stretch one of his Green Giant legs out under my seat--hello!! I am already licking the window over here.....not my fault that you are unnaturally tall and too cheap to book in First Class. ( Note: this rule does not include the inevitable Armrest War)

4) Always be SUPER NICE to the people checking you in---this person has the power to bump you up to First Class. (I have also learned--never ask to be bumped up. The only times that I have gotten an upgrade is when I was nice and did not request one)

5) You know those offers for a free ticket if you take a later flight???? Don't do it unless you are really NOT in a hurry to get home. I got stuck over-night in the twin cities once--didn't get to my hotel until midnight, b/c the later flight turned into the next morning at 6am. Oh, and you don't get to take your luggage either--it travels on to your destination and the airline gives you a tee-shirt, razor, comb, and a disposable toothbrush with toothpaste built into the bristles.

6) Don't argue with the TSA.....you have no power in the security line.....these people sometimes tend to be like the Mall Security Guard when you were in High School--don't be "that guy", don't give them their power trip. (Note: worst places for TSA Ego-Mania I have found are Wichita Airport and sometimes Atlanta.

7) The best airports to have a long lay-over or to get stuck in for an extended period of time:

Charlotte--love the rocking chairs

Minneapolis--lots of shops

Cincinnati--love the layout

Chicago Midway--love the food

8) Worst airports in which to get stuck:

Atlanta--once you get delayed...it could last forever

Chicago O'Hare--almost guaranteed delays

Detroit--bad record for lost luggage. In an 18 month period I connected in Detroit going to Lexington 5 times--on 4 of those flights my luggage didn't make my flight and was delayed as much as 2 days.

9) Speaking of Detroit, that reminds me--if they do lose your luggage--don't panic. Usually you get it back in less than 48 hours. I have never had a bag forever lost. However, one time it came back so badly beaten that a hole was worn in the front of the back and the side of my hairdryer was sanded down flat. I suspect that it had been drug across the tarmac of the Detroit airport while being transported to my flight.

10) A note about the motion-sickness bags, as soon as you get in your seat check to make sure that you have one. Also, it would not be a bag idea to always carry on your own seal-able plastic bag. Take it from me--when the urge strikes, the opening of the airline bag isn't really that big, and in a panic is easy to miss. And if it is a bumpy flight, you could need more than one.....

As a preventative--Drink plenty of water and keep away from the booze while flying--flying makes you dehydrated--which is enhanced by the liquor. Also note--getting tanked and then ending up stuck in turbulence in an enclosed space with no fresh air and only a paper bag to ease your woes---bad news. If you do get sick---NEVER throw up in the bathroom toilet. #1--Those airplane toilets never feel clean #2--they are small and there is too much potential for a "spray-back" #3--Don't put your face that close to any kind of public restroom.

While taking my bedding to by laundered last weekend, I made a stop into the local thrift store. I found a handful of cool things, an old plastic necklace of bright blue baubles, an original Barbara Streisand self titled album, and a set of Japanese tea cups.

Thanksgiving is good, mac and cheese is good, friends are good.

This will be my first Thanksgiving away from home. As depressing as it seems at times, I have decided to put my pity party on the back burner and focus my energy on creating a most fabulous meal for my husband and a few friends.
